Any individual is prone to getting acne. This includes any race and age. However, acne is most common in adolescents and young adults. It is very common with the puberty growth spurt in adolescence. Mainly found in the teenage and early adulthood years. It is believed that approximately 80 percent of all people between the ages of 10 and 25 have had acne outbreaks at some point in their lives.
Males are much more affected with severe disease, while females have a much milder form. In the majority of people, acne usually goes away by the time they reach adulthood. Unfortunately some adults may still have severe acne well into their adult years.
Severe acne can also cause scarring of the skin and also lead to thinning and weakening of the facial skin, making it more prone to infection and further damage. Fortunately, acne decreases in prevalence after youth.
