ERYTHEMA NODOSUM

Erythema Nodosum is a disorder characterized by acute or chronic inflammation of subcutaneous fat/fat tissue.

Appearance of Erythema Nodosum

  • Skin appears;

    • tender to touch

    • red, round nodules

    • sites: lower legs, knees and arms

  • patient can also complain about joint pain, muscle aches, and fever
  • found in about 1% of the population, but is found more in females than males
  • mainly affects teenagers to young adults

    Causes of Erythema Nodosum

        • infections, such as tuberculosis or bacteria, streprococcus

        • cancer

        • inflammatory diseases, such as Crohn's

        • drugs, such as aspirin and oral contraceptive pills, and antibiotics, like sulfonamides

    Treatments for Erythema Nodosum

    • aspirin, advil for pain and redness

    • bed rest

    • dressings
