HEAD LOUSE, PEDICULOSIS CAPITIS

Head Louse, Pediculosis Capitis, is a parasitic infection of the skin. It is usually asymptomatic, but can also present with itching and redness of the scalp. This infection is highly common in school-aged children.

Laboratory Diagnosis of Head Louse

Head Louse can been seen on microscopic examination. It is seen attached to hair chafts. Woods lamp, can also fluoresce any nites found on the scalp.

Treatment of Head Louse

Patients and all close contacts, such as household members, are treated with Permethrin shampoo which is applied to the scalp. Repetition of treatment is usually required. Any subsequent inflammatory reactions to the dead mites materials can be treated with over-the-counter antihistamines.
