Roseola infantum is caused by herpes virus 6 and affects only children.
Roseola infantum begins suddenly presenting with a high fever 40 C, that lasts for 1-5 days. The fever of Roseola infantum is unique, however, in that the child has no phyiscal signs to account for the fever. In addition, there are no constitutional signs present (e.g. the child is not tired or malaised).
Once the fever of Roseola infantum disappears, the appearance of a rash is seen. This rash only lasts for 24 hours, but usually provokes a stressful response from patients, who seek help immediately.
There are no treatments for Roseola infantum, as it is a self-limited disease.
