A sebaceous cyst is a benign cyst that is found ‘subcutaneously’ (below the upper skin layers). These cysts are much less prevalent than epidermal cysts. The cyst is filled with sebum, which is a waxy, paste-like material, originating from blocked sweat glands. These may become infected by bacteria, and therefore should be removed, including the area with the blocked sweat glands.
